The 3rd Annual March Kibble Madness!

Pet Events

Freekibble.com and Ellen Degeneres are getting a kick out of March Madness by aiming to deliver 50,000 meals for shelter pets.  Even if you aren’t a basketball fan, this is a great cause and a fun way to help underprivileged pets.

You know Freekibble.com, the web site started by 11-year-old girl, Mimi Ausland, 5 years ago. Every day you can go to the site and answer a pet related trivia question. For every question answered (right or wrong) Freekibble.com donates 10 pieces of Halo Spot's Stew kibble to shelter pets. They average 1.5 million meals a year now, thanks to so many loyal daily players!

Play the game and help pets without homes!

To up the ante for shelter pets even more, here's some March Madness fun for sports fans AND non sports fans.

Throughout the tournament, all you have to do is the following:

1.  "Like" Freekibble Facebook page and they'll donate one meal to shelter pets.

2.   "Like" Halo Pets' Facebook page and they'll donate one meal to shelter pets.

AND here's the really fun part....starting at the beginning of the tournament on Tuesday, each time a team with a dog or cat mascot wins (Bobcats, Cougars, Bulldogs, etc.) Freekibble.com will donate 100 more meals of Halo Spot's Stew!  There is the potential to earn 50,000 meals for shelter pets in a really easy fun way. Freekibble.com and Halo will be updating via Facebook where we are so be sure to "like" the pages for updates!

Personally, this makes the whole thing WAY more fun and really, like a sports event.

They thought it would be something fun and timely to post about during the March Madness-Madness. The promotion runs through April 8, just like the tourney.   Sounds like fun to me!

Here's the promo page to join the fun!  Facebook Free Kibble:

Why not join the fun and helps some pets in need along the way!!

Tips for Camping with Dogs

Pet Events
As summer is upon us, a lot of dog owners like to go on camping trips and bring their dogs with them.  While dogs are allowed at most camping grounds, the first thing you should do is to make sure that your camping site allows dogs.  You can call the state park or campgrounds before you go to confirm that pets are allowed.
Below are some tips to make it a fun and stress free trip for all.
Pack well
You should buy the appropriate flea medication and make sure it has been applied to your dog before you leave. Pack food bowls, food, medications, and a first aid kit for your dog. If you can fit it, bring their beds too.  It’ll make for a relaxed pup. Don’t forget to bring bags to clean up after your dog too.
Always keep your dog leashed
Even if your dog is great off-leash, a new place and unknown territory can bring about unexpected responses from your dog.  He or she might want to explore and not be able to find his or her way back or a loud noise could startle her and she may run.
Don’t use a flexi-lead or retractable leash. You can bring two leashes if you want, a walking one, and a slightly longer one so he or she can explore while on hikes. It’s also important for your dog’s own protection in case he or she tries to chase small animals or a large unfamiliar animal like a bear.
Watch out for your local campers
While your dog might be very friendly, not everyone you meet will be. Other dogs might not be as friendly as yours. If you run into someone else with a dog, talk to the owner and assess the body language both dogs are displaying. Having your dog leashed gives you the control to pull your dog away if a play session seems unlikely.
Reinforce commands if you need to
It’s easy for dogs to become excited in their new surroundings and they could start misbehaving. If your dog starts to disturb digs holes, or does other damage, quickly correct him or her like you would at home. Reinforce positive behavior and discourage negative behavior.
Apply flea medication on you and your dog
Remember to be consistent about applying flea and tick medication before heading out on the trip.  And, of course, bring your own insect repellent.  Be sure to check your dog after he or she walks in the woods for any bugs that might be on him or her. And, of course, check yourself too.=
Always clean up after your dog
Even though your dog’s waste is biodegradable, you should always clean up after him or her. Make it a point to leave the place in the same condition that you found it in. Dispose of all garbage in the trash cans and use biodegradable poop bags which can be found in many pet stores.
Have fun camping with your dogs!
